Somehow, Guinevere and Lancelot made it to his rooms. She sat him down on his bed and went to close his door, but not before sending for warm water and clean cloths. She leaned heavily against the door for a moment as her mind tried to race through the fog of pain that was threatening to consume her.

A Rider.

They had to send a rider to Arthur and the others. They needed to know what had happened. She and Lancelot...they needed to have him close by, just so they could make sure that he was unharmed. There was no way to know how many ambushes had been set up.

No, Arthur needed to come back so that they could take inventory of what was happening around them. She had to have both of them near her so she could see that they were alive. God, Arthur had to be alive. Please, do not let another ambush have been set up for Arthur.

She swallowed past the taste of blood in her mouth and moved back to Lancelot's side. This fight had taken a lot out of both of them. While part of her spirit had sung the bloodsong of her people once again, the other part of her had known that it was an encounter that niether she, nor Lancelot, were in prime fighting condition to deal with it.

She moved to Lancelot's side and silently began unfastening straps and undoing buckles to help him get out of his armour. As she helped divest him of his armour, she did her best to hide the sight of his back plate from him. It was smeared quite liberally with her blood and she did not want him to see it and become worried about her condition.

"Guinevere."

"In a moment," she said softly, taking off the rest of his armour.

"You're bleeding."

"As are you," she responded gently as she removed his gauntlets and frowned at the arrow wound and at the wounds on his shoulder and his upper arm.

Tears filled her eyes as she took in the hidden wounds he had sustained. She went to the door and opened it to allow the warm water to be brought into Lancelot's room. She had yet to meet her beloved's eyes with her own as she began to cut his shirt away.

After she stared at his chest and stomach for a long moment, she looked into his pain-filled eyes.

"We could have lost you," she whispered in a hoarse voice as she began to clean the blood off of his skin. Her touch was featherlight, but she knew that she was causing him pain, even if he didn't say so.

She kneeled on the floor at his side as her own strength started to give way. She looked him over as she continued to clean him up so Merlin would have an easier time attending to his wounds.

"Merlin will be here soon," she swallowed past the pain. "I will send a rider to Arthur to alert him and to call him back."

She tried not to lift her head because it tore at her throat and the pain from that was blinding. It made her want to just close her eyes and float away. She knew that Lancelot had heard what the Saxon had said on the battlefield. She knew it had caused him a moment of distraction where he was probably wounded again. She knew he had seen the wound at her throat and she couldn't read his eyes right now. If she could keep him focused more on his wounds and not hers, then he wouldn't be able to find out about any of the ones she was hiding from him.

She could do this. She could maintain self-control until her father got here. Then, she could slip away while all attention was on her beloved and deal with her own wounds and pain.

"Soon, love," she promised. "Soon."

Lancelot couldn't help but notice Arthur's shuffling and narrowed his eyes.

" Is everything alright? You only do that.." His hand gestured towards Arthur and the shuffling."..when something is wrong."

He did not relinquish his gaze as he knew to do that, would be giving Arthur a perfect way to avoid his question.

"I...." Arthur hesitated, not sure how to answer - especially when Lancelot was watching him like that. "Yes - everything's fine." He smiled a little ruefully, knowing Lancelot would see right through it.

"There's just a lot on my mind."

" You're an atrocious liar, Arthur. I do not know why you even attempt it." Lancelot remarked in a slightly chiding tone before it softened as he looked at the other." What is bothering you?"

Arthur laughed lightly, letting his hands have a depreciating smile. "I only lie badly when it's to you or Guinevere; the two of you read me like a bloody book - and an open one, at that," he defended himself, trying to figure out how to say what he didn't really want to say.

"It's been hard to remember...many things when I'm away," he said, not really ready to give in and tell all just yet. "And my mind supplies a lot of other things that I don't want to think about."

" That is because we know you so well." Lancelot retorted with a smug smile before his expression turned serious as Arthur continued on.

He shifted closer to the man who had been his best friend for as long as he could remember." What kind of things?"

This news worried him, what sort of things did Arthur forget when he was away? What things did his mind give him to think about?

Lancelot was seriously contemplating going with Arthur just to make sure he remained safe and that he kept his sanity.

"Many things," Arthur answered, avoiding the question. "Things you really...." He shook his head, hand going up to brush Lancelot's hair from his eyes again. "You need a haircut," he muttered distractedly, before going back to avoiding the question. "You know my mind, Lancelot; it's not my best friend, I can tell you as much."

Too many things that I don't even want to consider - or you to worry about.

" Maybe I do but you didn't answer my question." Lancelot argued. Hands moved to grip Arthur's neck and thumbs lifted to turn his face back to meet the dark gaze of the Sarmatian Knight.

" Talk to me, Arthur. Please?" His voice held an almost pleading tone.

He had spent countless months worrying for Arthur and it would seem, those sleepless nights had not been for nothing. Something was bothering the other and Lancelot wanted to know what that was.

"I...." Arthur hesitated - but knew there wasn't much point, that Lancelot wouldn't give up until he had an answer - and a truthful one, at that.

Maybe he'd get away with half an answer....

"It becomes hard to remember what's waiting for me at home," he finally replied, eyes fluttering shut as he leant into Lancelot's touch. "Especially when I'm so far away from it."

Lancelot frowned briefly." Arthur.." He started to speak before simply shaking his head. His thumbs moved across his skin and gently eased away the tension they could feel beneath them.

" No matter what happens, you will always have someone or something waiting for you. If it isn't Guinevere, it's me and if it isn't me, it's Guinevere." His words were spoken with a certain amount of passion because Lancelot believed in them.

He leaned forward and graced Arthur's forhead with a kiss. Lancelot was never shy to show affection--it was a natural thing. There was nothing wrong with it. People could go to hell if they thought otherwise." You have us and you always will. You have your Knights, your refuge and the people who believe in you."

Lancelot was eloquent when he chose to be and this was one of those moments.

Arthur let his eyes stay closed, just breathing slowly, overwhelmed by emotion. He'd known, he swore he did - but sometimes, it was hard to remember, sometimes he thought they might well be happier without him. But in moments like these, he let himself believe.

He raised his hand, running it through Lancelot's hair and pausing on his neck but doesn't move otherwise.

"You know how much you mean to me, don't you?"

Lancelot smiled faintly." I have some idea. I need no words from you, your actions have said more than enough."

He exhaled a breath." I remember your voice, it called me back. I was so close to letting go on that battlefield but your voice, it called me back."

His eyes lifted and rested on Arthur's face." You would not let me go, I remember you screaming at me to hold on. I remember the blows to my chest as you started my heart."

Lancelot shook his head." I don't need words."

"I'm glad you came back," Arthur replied, smiling, breathing quickened just from the memory of the fear that had coursed through him when he's seem Lancelot's body on the ground, the arrow in his chest.

"I don't think I've ever found the right words when it's come to you." He brushed his hand lightly over Lancelot's features before letting it drop away again. "I'm glad to be home, if only for a little bit."

It reminds me of the things that matter.
