Self-preservation. No question about it.
Forgiveness is all well and good, but there are some things or people that you just can't forgive---no matter how much you try or want to. You don't want to give someone another chance to betray you and stab a sword through your back.
If you do choose forgiveness over self-preservation, be sure that the person in question is deserving of your forgiveness and a second chance. Not every one is and they will twist any type of weakness to their advantage.
I would like to be able to say that I believe that everyone is deserving of forgiveness, but I can't. I don't. There are some people that are just not redeemable. Some betrayals cannot be washed away.
Some actions cannot be forgiven...nor forgotten.
