The scariest thing that has ever happened to me?

*Guinevere wraps her arms around herself as if she's cold*

Living the life I have lived, you would think I would say days of battle or slavery would be the things that have scared me the most. But that's not it. I wasn't even scared when I was a slave, kept in that tiny cage at the orders of that bastard Marcus.

The shadow of death scared me, it's true, but it wasn't the thought of my death that terrified me. It was when death sought him that I became truly scared.

...She had fallen in love with him the first time she had seen him when she was a younger girl. And now, they were fighting near each other during the Saxon attack. Cynric was attacking her and she could see her death in his eyes. The sword glanced off of her shoulder, missing the blow he was trying to land on her. Out of nowhere, Lancelot was rising up between her and the Saxon.

She didn't seen all of their battle, busily fighting to keep any of the Saxons from striking his back, but she turned in time to see the crossbow bolt appear in the center of his chest and his sword take down Cynric.

Her scream echoed across the battlefield when she saw Lancelot fall. She looked around for the other knights, but she was the only one near him.

Guinevere fought her way back to Lancelot's side. She dropped to her knees and lifted his head out of the mud and the blood and onto her lap.

She snarled as people came close to them, swinging her hatchets at anyone who came near. She wouldn't let anyone touch him!

She sheltered his head in her lap as the battle raged on around her. She kept talking to him and touching him. He wouldn't die. He couldn't die and leave her. It was only when Arthur dropped to his knees beside her that she realized the battle was over. There were tears in her eyes when she looked at Arthur and recounted what had happened.

She followed behind the other knights as they carried Lancelot into the stronghold. She stayed in his room with Arthur as Merlin and others worked on him. She sat at his bedside, holding one of his hands in hers as he spent so much time unconscious.

When he finally woke up, Guinevere felt immense relief. It was only when she saw that he was going to live and he was going to be okay that she stopped being so scared...

Fear is not something that I like to think much about.

Those days...waiting to see if he was going to make it or if I was going to lose him...I think those were the hardest days I have ever had to live in my life. I don't know what I would have done had I lost him. To have lost him without him knowing how much he meant to me...

I have never, ever, been that scared in my entire life.
